Does online hypnotherapy actually work?
Online Hypnotherapy Ontario: Does It Actually Work Over Video?
TL;DR: The most common question from people considering their first session is whether online hypnotherapy works as well as being in the same room. The short answer, backed by research, is yes. Because hypnotherapy works through language, awareness, and the client's own subconscious responses, none of which require physical proximity. This article answers the five questions people ask most about online hypnotherapy Ontario, including what sessions actually look like, who it works best for, and what the research says.
Quick Answer
Online hypnotherapy Ontario refers to hypnotherapy sessions delivered via secure video call: the same structured intake conversation, the same trance work, and the same subconscious access as an in-person session, conducted from the comfort of the client's own space. A 2023 study published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis found that video-based hypnosis is widely accepted and effective, with clients reporting similar levels of relaxation and suggestibility compared to in-person sessions. Fanis Makrigiannis, a Certified Hypnotherapist and NLP Master Practitioner at Mind Spirit Body Hypnosis in Oshawa, Ontario, conducts all sessions virtually and has worked with clients across Ontario, including Durham Region, Toronto, Ottawa, and beyond.

In this article:
Ontario's therapy waitlists have grown significantly in recent years. Mind Spirit Body Hypnosis has reported a marked increase in inquiries from clients across Ontario and the United States seeking virtual, non-medication approaches to anxiety, trauma, and stress, a pattern reflected across the province as people search for effective support without the months-long wait that traditional in-person services often require.
For many of those people, the first question is not whether hypnotherapy might help. It is whether it can actually work over a screen.
The answer is yes. And there is a structural reason why.
Does Online Hypnotherapy Work as Well as In-Person?
This is the question most people ask before their first session, and it is a reasonable one. The instinct is that something must be lost in translation when therapy moves to a screen. For hands-on approaches that depend on physical presence, that instinct is correct. For hypnotherapy, it is not.
Hypnotherapy works through language, guided awareness, and the client's own internal responses. The practitioner asks questions and offers suggestions. The client's subconscious responds through what emerges: images, sensations, emotions, memories, associations. What the session accesses is located inside the client, not in the room. Moving the session online changes the format. It does not change the mechanism.
The research reflects this clearly. A large international survey of 691 clinicians across 31 countries found that 54% rated tele-hypnosis as equally effective as face-to-face sessions, with the remaining respondents noting only minor differences in outcome. A 2018 study treating irritable bowel syndrome via Skype found no statistically significant difference in outcomes between online and in-person hypnotherapy sessions.
There is one dimension where online sessions may actually have an advantage. Many people find it easier to relax in their own home than in a clinical environment they have never been to before. The familiar surroundings, the absence of travel anxiety, and the ability to remain in the same space after the session ends rather than navigating home in a post-trance state can all contribute to a deeper and more comfortable experience.
This is consistent with what clients I work with across Ontario regularly report. The online format, once people have experienced it, often feels more comfortable and more containable than they expected.

What Does an Online Hypnotherapy Session Actually Look Like?
A virtual session at Mind Spirit Body Hypnosis looks exactly like an in-person session, conducted via a secure video platform with a camera and audio connection. The session has two parts.
Part one: the conversation. The first 10 to 15 minutes of any session, whether first or subsequent, involve a structured conversation. In a first session, this covers the specific shape of the presenting issue: what triggers it, how long it has been present, what has already been tried, and what the person wants to be genuinely different. In subsequent sessions, it covers what has shifted since the last session and what the focus of this session will be.
The conversation is the foundation for everything that follows. Generic trance work produces generic results. The intake conversation is what makes the work precise.
Part two: the trance work. Once the map has been established, I guide you into a relaxed, focused state through a combination of directed attention, breathing, and progressive physical relaxation. This takes between five and fifteen minutes and requires no special preparation. The trance that follows feels like a deepening of calm rather than a loss of awareness. You remain conscious throughout, can speak at any point, and will remember the session.
The trance work itself typically runs between 20 and 30 minutes. At the end, I bring you back to full waking awareness through a brief count-up and closing. The full session runs 60 minutes.
After the session, I recommend at least 15 minutes of quiet time before returning to demanding tasks. At home, this is natural and requires no planning. It is one of the practical advantages of virtual sessions.
Who Benefits Most From Virtual Sessions?
Online hypnotherapy works well for almost everyone who would benefit from in-person sessions. A few specific groups find it particularly valuable.
People in areas outside major cities. Online hypnotherapy in Ontario means that clients in smaller communities across the province (from Thunder Bay to Kingston, from Barrie to Windsor) can access the same quality of hypnotherapy that has previously required travel to a major urban centre.
People with demanding schedules. Eliminating the commute makes it possible to fit a session into a lunch hour or an evening slot in a way that an in-person appointment would not allow. Consistency of sessions matters for cumulative results, and the virtual format makes consistency easier to maintain.
People who prefer privacy. For presentations that carry social stigma or feel deeply personal, including anxiety, trauma, compulsive habits, or sexual confidence, the privacy of a home-based session reduces the vulnerability of the in-person waiting room. Many clients report feeling more open in their own space.
People managing health conditions that affect mobility or energy. For clients with chronic fatigue, chronic pain, or other conditions that make travel genuinely difficult, virtual access removes a real barrier to care.
People receiving care from outside Ontario. Since I obtained my certifications through the American Board of Hypnotherapy and the National Guild of Hypnotists, I am also able to work with clients in the United States. A number of my regular clients are based in US states, accessing sessions from their own homes.
How to Prepare for Your First Online Session
Good preparation takes about five minutes and makes a noticeable difference to the quality of the session.
Find a private, quiet space. The session requires that you not be overheard and not be interrupted. A bedroom with the door closed works well. Turn off notifications on devices you are not using for the session.
Use headphones if possible. Headphones significantly improve audio quality and help create the sense of the practitioner's voice being present and close, which supports the depth of the trance experience.
Have a comfortable place to sit or recline. You do not need to lie flat. Many people find a reclining chair or leaning back against pillows on a bed the most comfortable position. What matters is that the body can relax without needing to maintain an active posture.
Allow buffer time after the session. Build 15 to 20 minutes of quiet time into your schedule after the session ends. You may not need it, but having it available means you are not rushing from a trance state to a demanding context.
Know what you want to work on. The clearest preparation for a first session is not research about hypnotherapy but clarity about what you want to be different. Specifically, not generally. What would change if this work succeeded? What would you be doing differently? What would you feel differently? The more specific and vivid this answer, the more precisely the session can be built to produce it.
How to Choose the Right Online Hypnotherapist in Ontario
Ontario has a growing number of practitioners offering online hypnotherapy. The signals that distinguish quality from credential-holding-only include the following.
Recognized certifications. Look for practitioners certified through organizations with rigorous standards: the American Board of Hypnotherapy (ABH), the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH), or the American Board of NLP (ABNLP). I hold certifications through all three, which I am happy to verify on request.
Transparent approach. A quality practitioner can explain what will happen in a session clearly and without mystery. If a practitioner cannot explain the mechanism of what they do in plain language, that is worth noting.
A free consultation before commitment. No one should be expected to pay for a first session without a conversation first. I offer a free 30-minute strategy session for all new clients, in which we talk through what the person wants to work on and whether hypnotherapy is the right approach for their specific situation. No trance work in the strategy session. No pressure to commit.
Real client reviews. Look for reviews that describe specific changes rather than general positivity. "My anxiety is gone" is more informative than "Fanis is amazing." Both are welcome, but specificity suggests genuine experience.
For anyone searching for online hypnotherapy in Ontario, the clearest first step is a free conversation with the practitioner you are considering. The strategy session is that conversation. It costs nothing and tells you what you need to know.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does online hypnotherapy work as well as in-person? Yes. The mechanism of hypnotherapy is internal: it works through language, guided awareness, and your own subconscious responses. A 2023 study in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis confirmed that video-based hypnosis produces relaxation and suggestibility comparable to those of in-person sessions. A survey of 691 clinicians found 54% rated tele-hypnosis as equally effective as face-to-face. The format is different. The mechanism is not.
What platform is used for sessions? Sessions are conducted via a standard secure video platform. Details are provided at booking. A stable internet connection and either built-in device audio or headphones are required. No software downloads or technical setup is typically needed.
Will I lose control or go unconscious during an online session? No. The trance state is focused, relaxed awareness, not unconsciousness. You remain in control throughout, can speak at any point, and will remember the session. The same applies online as in-person.
Is it harder to go into trance over video? Research and clinical experience both suggest no significant difference in trance depth between online and in-person sessions. Many people find it slightly easier to relax in their own familiar environment than in a clinical space they have not been to before.
What if my internet connection drops during a session? If a connection drops during the trance work, the session can be resumed. I always provide a brief orienting close before fully ending the trance state, so a technical interruption does not leave a client in an unresolved trance. Sessions disrupted by technology are rescheduled or resumed at no additional charge.
Can children access online hypnotherapy in Ontario? Yes. I work with clients aged 10 and older. Online sessions are often well-suited to younger clients who are more comfortable in their own home environment than in a clinical setting.
How many sessions will I need? It depends on the presenting concern. Habit change typically runs two to four sessions. Anxiety and confidence work typically runs three to five sessions. Complex patterns typically run four to six or more. An honest, specific estimate is always given in the free strategy session.
Do you work with clients outside Ontario? Yes. A number of my regular clients are based in the United States. Sessions are conducted in the same format, via secure video, with the same approach. The virtual model removes geography as a barrier to quality hypnotherapy.
How do I book? Book a free 30-minute strategy session at calendly.com/mindspiritbodyhypnosis. No referral is required, no commitment is expected, and no trance work happens in the strategy session.
