Recently, I had a moment in time that brought me back to my childhood.
While stuck in highway traffic once again, I scanned around me out of complete boredom. Beside me was a minivan with three young children inside. But, something odd caught my attention. The driver, was smoking a cigarette (with the windows sealed shut).
Now, let’s go back to the 70’s and 80’s. With three brothers jammed in the rear seat, mom in the front passenger and dad driving.
My dad (may he rest in peace) was a heavy smoker. He smoked everywhere and constantly. One of “his” spots was smoking in the car. Now, imagine a typical Canadian winters day, freezing…the windows frosted even with the heat turned on. I can hear my dad saying how freezing it was as he lit a cigarette – yes with the windows sealed shut.
After a few moments, a light blue haze on the ceiling appeared. We as kids had no idea what that was, so we continued our normal routines.
Without making excuses for that generation, they did not have the same information that is available to us now. We basically have the world on our fingertips.
Today, there is absolutely no excuse for this type of behavior. Smoking manufacturers post labels and graphic images on their products, the internet is full of valuable information and the medical profession is constantly reminding us of the true dangers of this powerful addiction.
Sitting in the back seat of my dads car while he puffed away, didn’t seem like an issue for me back then, but now I realized that my dad normalized smoking (no excuse for me starting) and that second hand smoking is almost as harmful as smoking itself.
